Fashion on the Hudson

Article by Iman Gulston

On Saturday July 13, the fashionably inclined came out to the Free Fashion on the Hudson show at the Riverbank State Park. The show, presented by Fashion Avenue News Magazine featured local and faraway talent. The audience in attendance was also dressed to impress. The models who sauntered down the catwalk varied in age and even included some school aged kids with serious attitude. Not only did the show feature fashion, but entertainment as well. Viewers enjoyed a violin performance, a little opera, and even some belly dancing.

Fashion Avenue News, who organized the event presented awards to notables in the fashion community and even presented a Fashion Icon Award to Spinderella of Salt-N-Pepa fame.

There were a variety of pieces included in the show from couture to more casualwear but a clear fan favorite was a dramatic floor-length purple evening gown. The audience responded with extra loud applause and audible gasps at its appearance.

Of the designers featured, one who truly stood out was Clarence Black an F.I.T. graduate. His collection utilized a palette of beige, champagne, and muted brown but the silhouette and details of his pieces were eye-catching. An especially unique piece was a floral-printed silk skirt suit with a rope belt. The shape of the sleeves and the collar really set the piece apart.

The cloudy skies definitely did not put a damper on the energy of the event and all who attended enjoyed the spectacle.

Curves for a Cure Rocks the Runway during FFFWeek

by Trisha Sanyal

A fabulous night of curves, fashion, celebrities, and searching for a cure! That was the headlining mission for this year’s Curves for a Cure Runway Show at Full Figured Fashion Week.  Held at the beautiful Affinia Hotel, the Fitzgerald Ballroom was filled with movers and shakers in the plus size fashion industry and was lined with unbelievable pieces that were featured in the show.  The pink carpet was alive, the models breathtaking, and the ballroom was glittering with flashing lights and live music.

The ballroom was decorated in fluorescent purple and pink lights highlighting the Breast Cancer Awareness theme with a sense of femininity from the soft colors and flashing lights.  Each seat housed its own goodie bag with little products from various sponsors and event vendors. The back of the ballroom welcomed each guest with cheese, crackers, and fruit as well as a FULL bar and signature cocktail to wash down the delightful appetizers with.  The signature cocktail, dubbed the name “Sonsitinis” was a delicious blend of a green apple and vodka martini, made especially for Curves for a Cure provided by event sponsor Sonsi.

Toy Monique, the official Face of FFF 2013, did an impeccable job of hosting the runway show as she graced the audience at her post at the top of the runway.  Monique is no stranger to when it comes to keeping the audience hyped up and alive with her bubbly personality.

Models included Lucille O’Neal (Shaq’s mom), Yolanda Moore (Two-time WNBA Champion) ,  Marie Denee (The Curvy Fashitonista), Gwen DeVoe (founder and CEO of FFFWeek), Rosie Mercado, and Kaela Humphries.  Each model worked the runway like a pro and had the crowd roaring with cheers and whistles.  It was a truly a glorious night of HOT full figured fashion in honor of a very noble cause to raise awareness and find a cure for breast cancer.

Indie Runway Show Makes A Splash on Full Figured Fashion Week

Article by Ada Mbogu

Photography by Saundra Heath

What do you get when you mix cutting edge designs, beautiful, curvy women and a dosage of elegance?-an extravagant runway show celebrating full figured women and culture.
Women of all shades, shapes and colors gathered in the Financial District’s illustrious Broad Street Ballroom to view the latest styles hitting the scene at the Indie Designer Showcase this past Friday.
As part of Full Figured Fashion Week, the runway show showcased individual designers creating fabulous looks for plus size women; something that has not been done often within the fashion industry.
This year’s Indie Designer showcase pushed the envelope on what plus size fashion is really all about. Instead of using over-sized garments, unflattering silhouettes and daunting patterns that your own grandmother wouldn’t wear, the designs painted a beautiful portrait of a woman decked out in trendy and bold styles that accentuate  her curves while still looking fierce.
The show began with a performance by trio singing group, The Glamazons, who brought their sex appeal and raw energy to the runway.
The beautiful models graced the runway next wearing designs by On Oz, which featured figure hugging Midi dresses and my personal favorite, an ivory knee length dress complete with flowered accented shoulders.
Next up was Amiiee, whose designs brought more of an elegant meets chic vibe to the runway with her collection. The dresses and garments were paired bold and flavorful prints, and rich colors, while each model looked sassy strutting their stuff.
ZMJ Denim showcased a unique collection of curvy models breaking down the stereotype that full figured women can’t look sexy rocking denim jeans. Between a standard white denim ensemble and beautiful black and white floral denim suit with an embellished neckline, nothing says I’m comfortable in my skin more by wearing and looking fabulous in a pair of jeans.
But perhaps some of the crowds (and my personal) favorite designs were from The Skinny Billionairess and Rue 114, who happened to win The 2013 Designer of the Year award.
The Skinny Billionairess’s rendition of a Greek Goddess came in full swing while models walked down the runway wearing breathtaking gowns of stoic colors, patterns and thigh high splits.
Rue 114 made a tidal wave on the runway, infusing African print designs with a modern twist. The crowd was excited to see how the African aesthetic can intertwine and be worn so uniquely by full figured  women.
Other designers featured in the Indie showcase were Elocin, Nakimoli, Tru Diva Designs, Youtheary Khmer, huudaverti, T~TymeLady Couture, Live Unlimited London and Sean Anthony Designs Inc., each dropping heavy heat with their collections, while the vivacious crowd savored every moment.
But behind every great show, is a great mind and innovator who was able to follow her goals and turn them into success.
Since 2009, Gwendolyn Devoe, who was host of the runway show and is the creative and executive producer of Full Figured Fashion Week, has seen her vision come alive with the events getting larger and more innovative and more importanly, being able to empower curvy women to remain confident and stay beautiful.
“Today Full Figured Fashion Week offers 20 events and 4 runway shows featuring 50 curvy models selected from a 13-city national tour,” said Devoe.
“As we celebrate 5 years of confident, beautiful women of all sizes, but also we hope to celebrate and empower not only plus size women but the plus size fashion industry as a whole.”
